VA/NC area meet July 11-13 2003 (comments/suggestions?)
I need opinions from you VA/NC guys. How does this sound for a meet:
The meet will be at VIR outside of Danville, VA. VIR is a 12 turn (the dirty dozen) road course that is 3.27 miles around. There is also a North section course and a South section course, but this event will be the full course.
Spectators are allowed to walk the paddock area, talk with the car owners, and even touch the cars. If you get extremely lucky, you may be able to talk one into giving you a ride around the in-field (at many of the non-competitive events, you can get a ride around the track!). There are few stands, so you will be better off bringing your own chairs to the event so you can move to where the action is.
MAP:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...submit=Get+Map
You can click the "Get Directions To This Location" button and type in your home address to get specific directions to VIR. If you make reservations to a hotel ( http://www.yellowpages.com ) then I can direct you to the hotel after you get to VIR, and/or you can look up/print the directions from mapquest.
Event information:
http://www.virclub.com/pages/eventInfo03/hsr03.htm
Basically, a 3 day weekend July 11-13 (Fri-Sun) of Historic Sportscar Racing, including the American Muscle Car Challenge (1st gen Mustangs, old Vettes, the like), World Championship of Makes Series, World Sportscar Series, Historic GT, Klub Sport Porsche Challenge, Rolex Endurance Challenge Series Races and WorldCom Dash Series Races.
Ticket prices are as follows (per person):
All weekend: $25
Fri: 10
Sat: 15
Sun: 15
Camping grounds are available at $10 per weekend per tent. (no campfires allowed)
We will hopefully have a grille there with hotdogs, hamburgers, and any other foods that anyone brings. Coolers with drinks are allowed, but there will be NO alcoholic beverages!!!
As far as I know, there will also be a "parade lap" on Saturday where you can donate $10 to the children's miracle fund and take a lap (or 2 or 3) around VIR.
Also, if you plan to come all weekend, but don't want to camp (and live too far off to travel), there are plenty of hotels in the Danville area, BUT you WILL need to call ahead of time to reserve a room. The hotels fill up FAST when there is a race going on at VIR.
There is a Ford dealership in Danville with several Roush Mustangs, a 2000 Cobra R (if they don't sell it before then), and they usually have a used Lightning, too. We can make a stop by there, and they would probaly let some of you 20+ guys test drive the L and maybe a Roush.
Let me know how you like this idea, and if you have any suggestions, too. I'd like to see a good turnout.

One question: why no alcohol?
It sounds like it would be a good weekend. I just might have to drive down.

Well, if you want to bring your own, I guess that would be fine, but I don't want it to turn into a party, especially since most participants will probably be under 21.

How big is it? Meaning how many hot dogs/hamburgers/steaks will fit on it at once?

For the parade lap you don't, but for any of the driving schools or competitions you do.
On the parade lap you won't be getting much over 65mph, and you will be pulled off the track for driving in appropriately, so they allow any vehicle that is legal to drive on the street to participate.

I PMed rick asking if he saw my post about VIR in the regional forum, but all he replied was "I remember seeing something about VIR." *shrug*
I've got some additional plans going now. Thursday July 10th at Piedmont Dragstrip in Greensboro (about 30-45 minutes South of Danville), there is going to be the weekly Test & Tune/Street Battle. I was thinking that some of you guys who would want to come up a day early could all meet at the dragstrip around 5:30-6:00 and run a few times. Its an 1/8 mile track, but it should make for a good time.
Gates open there at 6:00 for the Test & Tune, and the track stays open untill 9:00. I'm not sure of the gate/racing fees, but I think its around $15 to race, and you get as many runs as you can.
I think that would make an excellent start to the weekend.

All this sounds great Ash. I would like to be there for it. I am an old scout and love to camp, too bad they don't allow camp fires, but oh well. Sorry I had not read this previously.

No, not really, do the yahoo thing, use Danville, its supposed to be right next to Danville, and Danville is right on the NC/VA line.

I'm about 25 minutes from Jacksonville. Just north of you, so if you want to cruise up together, i'm all for it. Drop me an e-mail with your number and maybe we can hook up this weekend or something.

I will more than likely be going to Piedmont July 10th. On that note, I'll probably be going this Sunday (June 8th), too, for anyone who wants to go. I won't be running, due to the fact that I'll be breaking in a new clutch, but a few of my friends are going and they'll be running. Should be a 344rwhp '00 GT, '01 Cobra, '89 GT, and '96 v6 going. Maybe a few more people if I can get the interest up.

Hmmm...my friends told me it started Sunday morning (didn't mention a time), but the piedmont schedule doesn't list anything for Sunday. I'll have to get back to you on this one.

Well, I'm not sure what times the races end, but they usually run from around 9 or so till around 4-5 each day.
I have found that I won't be able to come on Friday, but don't let that stop you guys from meeting up in the parking lot. I'll be there for sure on Saturday and Sunday, though.
