Instructional On installing a Push Button Starter

I installed mine today and made the needed changes so that this applies to the 94-98

The switch i bought came from Autozone, made by pilot. it was $30, but worth the money since you get instructions, a nice wiring harness, a chrome switch, optional mounting plate, 3 lense covers (red, blue and clear) and a swivel base so you dont have the tear it all apart if you want to change the colors. the harness consisted of Black, Red, Yellow, and White Wires.


Tools You Will Need:
Set of wrenches
Wire Cutters
Screw Driver
Electrical Tape
Box Cutter


What You Need To Do:

1. Remove the Kick Panel and the Metal Piece Underneath it.

2. find the Black box with wires coming out of it (it has a grey top with a screw holding it in. Be careful taking it off, I broke mine all to ****. I didnt bother trying to get it back on because 1) it was broken and 2) the wires were so large, and well restrained, there wasnt a lot of point in putting it back.

3. Once that is removed you will see 5 bigger Yellow Wires. These are all Constants, You can hook any of these into the buttons power wire.

4. Use the Wire Cutters to strip about a half of an ich of the wire coating off. Then take a wrap the wire from the relay (in my case red) around that striped spot and then use electrical tape to hold it in place. Another way to do it is to take your Box cutters and strip the wire away in one spot. this keeps you from having to completely cut the wire, and turned out to be really convienent.

5. Next look for a Black/green wire (this is what it was on the 98). Take the yellow wire from the relay and do it the same way as the red wire.


6. The next one is the starter wire. Which is white/pink and a bit (not much!) smaller than the rest. you can splice into this one the same way as above, but i really DO NOT recomend it! Could lead to later problems!

7. After everything is hooked up, youre going to want to find a ground. I found that the best place was on the metal peice that remains after you took everything apart from under the steering wheel. i simply hooked the ground wire on to one of the screws and bolted it down. its easily hidden, and easily accessable.

8. Now that youre wired up, connected everything do the spot you located on the dash to mount it. the kit should have come with an optional bracket, but if you decide to put it on the dash, the best place is on the guage cluster bezel. i found that all the included wires are the PERFECT length and do not need to be altered at all to get to this spot. not to mention, it looks really good in the car too

9. To use the swich you will need to put ur key in, turn it so that all the power in the car comes on and then hit the button. The engine should start.

This is Probably my most favorite part of my car now. There are two ways u can install it. One with the key turning still working or disabling the key starter and just using the button all the time. I decided to keep the key working just so i wouldn't have any problems in the future.

Also I bought the autozone speacial "no name" swich. Came with the Swich, Relay, with four wires coming from it. Black, Red, Yellow, White.

But you can just cut the white/pink wire and connect it straight to the white one from the relay(This will disable the key from being able to start the car).
7. After this is finished a good place to ground the swich is on the little metal piece located under the metal that is under the kick panel. Thats a mouthfull but it's there.
8. Once the wiring is done connect the swich to the ground and the relay and mount it in ur car. I chose next to my cluster on the right side. But there are plenty of places to do it.
9. To use the swich you will need to put ur key in, turn it so that all the power in the car comes on and then hit the button. The engine should start.

what exactly is the purpose of a push button?

I did something similar in my car when my key broke in half. However since my car is keyless, I had to add some extra stuff to power the accessories on by switch. It was pretty easy and only took about 5 hours to pull off with a couple relays and a multimeter.

sweet... The push button was in sportscars in the 60s and 70s mostly. I know they are in the new s2000s. The main purpose is because it's cool to start ur car with a push of a button... I'd love to someday do away with the key all together. But i need to figure out how to bypass the security system somehow. What i'd really like to do is install the starter that is in the new boats what malibu puts out. Instead of a key u have a code to start the car. That sounds so much easier

Do u still need the key in the ignition to start the car? Cuz otherwise i could see this as a major security issue.

If you have to have the key in the ignition to use the push button, why not just go ahead and turn the key a llittle more to start the car?

does it make a difference if you drive stick or not? has anyone set this up on a stick set up? I assume it's the same, accept, turn key (power on), engage clutch and push button.

Also, should I disconnect the battery before attempting this?

Also, why does it say red/black or red/light green, are both those wires in there or is this for diff years?

and when they say red and two other colors just means that ford uses different wires all the time... so u never know

I think it is Cadillac that has a thing where it is pushbutton and you don't need to have the key...what you do need is a credit-card sized activator thingy that is sensed within a certain distance of the car...so you can just keep it in your wallet and when you get in the car...push the button and go...I've always wanted to install something like that into my car...can't wait til they do something like that for the aftermarket...

Is it possible to get a pushbutton kit that instead of a button it is a switch just like in the nascar cars?...I think that would be cool...maybe I could actually use one of those little spaces below my radio that is just a black spot right now...

I removed what I figured was the kick-panel (the panel to the left of the dead pedal where the hood release is, and saw no black box, or anything like that 2nd picture. Im probably looking in the wrong spot, any help?

I was wonderin if you could give a lil more detail to your instructions because I have to do this mod in one day as I drive my car to school everyday so I really don't want to mess it up makin it so that I cannot start the car

it takes less than an hour to do...it took us like 20 minutes...all you have to do is know how to splice into some wires and you're set

I got mine at autozone last night, it has 3 different colors (red blue and clear/white) and was 29.99. Its got everything all ready to wire up. There is a aluminum bezel around it that you can keep on or take off as well.
